In a recent government meeting, significant advancements were made regarding labor agreements for educational staff in Hingham. The Hingham Administrative Association successfully negotiated a new four-year contract covering the period from 2023 to 2027, which includes several key benefits for assistant principals and directors.
Among the highlights of the new contract are the introduction of religious and bereavement leave, as well as an expanded parental leave policy. Members will receive up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave, phased in over the contract's duration. This year, members can utilize up to 12 weeks of their sick time, with two weeks of paid parental leave available in 2024-2025, four weeks in 2025-2026, and eight weeks in the final year, alongside access to sick time.
Additionally, the contract stipulates a cost-of-living increase of 3% annually, with a 3.5% increase in the final year. Longevity payments will also be increased to align more closely with those received by teachers. The collaborative negotiation process was praised, with committee members expressing gratitude to the bargaining team for their efforts.
The committee also addressed concerns regarding the financial implications of the new contract, confirming that it aligns with the financial management plan adopted in March 2023. The contract was ratified unanimously by the committee members present.
In a related development, a new union representing administrative assistants in central office and school buildings is in the process of finalizing its first contract. This contract aims to enhance pay and working conditions, making public schools a more attractive workplace. It includes similar benefits such as bereavement and religious leave, as well as the parental leave policy. The cost-of-living increase for this group is also set at 3% annually over the four-year contract.
While the new union's contract has not yet been ratified, the discussions have been characterized by thoughtful collaboration, with an emphasis on recognizing the value of the administrative staff's contributions to the educational environment.
