During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant changes to water and waste management fees that will impact local residents. The anticipated aggregate increase in utility bills is set at 6.9%, raising the average monthly bill from $87.62 to approximately $94.14. This adjustment reflects the rising costs associated with water, wastewater, and solid waste services.
City officials clarified that of the total bill, the city will retain only a small portion of the revenue. Specifically, for a standard water bill, $20 will go to the local water authority, while the city will receive $14. The city retains all revenue from sewer services and solid waste management.
Additionally, the meeting addressed ongoing issues with Waste Connections, a waste management company that has reportedly not responded to the city’s demand letters regarding franchise fees. In contrast, Waste Management has been compliant with its fee obligations. City officials indicated that they would seek legal counsel to determine the next steps in addressing the non-compliance of Waste Connections.
These discussions highlight the city's efforts to manage rising utility costs while ensuring compliance from waste management providers.
