Texas adopts historic first state flood plan to combat risks

During a recent government meeting, Commissioners Puentes and Vieiral abstained from discussions regarding a motion that was subsequently approved. The meeting proceeded with an update on significant developments in flood management, particularly the adoption of Texas' first-ever state flood plan.

Jaime Salazad, the general manager of the drainage district, provided insights into the newly adopted 2024 state flood plan, which aims to deliver a comprehensive assessment of flood risks and mitigation strategies across Texas. This plan is the culmination of extensive planning and data collection efforts from 15 flood planning groups statewide, including Region 15, which encompasses areas from Del Rio to Cameron County.

The state flood plan is set to be presented to the Texas Legislature on September 1, 2024. It marks a historic initiative to systematically address flood hazards and enhance the safety of Texas residents by reducing the risks and impacts associated with flooding.
