In a recent government meeting, officials approved several significant funding initiatives aimed at enhancing community services and economic development.
The first item on the agenda was the renewal of an intergovernmental agency agreement for a K9 adoption service, which includes a 3% annual rate increase. The new cost per call is set at $161.20, with annual contract prices varying based on the number of calls from different municipalities. For instance, Granville's contract totals $2,417.93 based on 15 calls, while Morgantown's contract, reflecting 221 calls, amounts to $35,624.
Next, the commission approved funding of up to $12,000 for the installation of a fire hydrant near the Blacksville Volunteer Fire Department, aligning with the county's ongoing policy to support fire safety infrastructure.
A major discussion centered on a financial contribution to the Monongalia County Development Authority for the Richwood redevelopment project. This initiative aims to revitalize approximately ten acres along Richwood Avenue, with a focus on demolishing 57 structures to facilitate new development. The authority requested $500,000 to establish a cash reserve necessary for refinancing efforts, which is critical for moving the project into its development phase. The city of Morgantown has already committed $500,000, bringing the total requested to $1 million. This funding is seen as essential for attracting further investment and job creation in the area.
Additionally, the commission considered a request from Catholic Charities of West Virginia for a $150,000 contribution to support operations at Hazel's House of Hope, a shelter providing vital services to the community.
These initiatives reflect a collaborative effort among local government entities to enhance public safety, support community services, and stimulate economic growth in the region.
