Rod Dimmit, a dedicated volunteer at the Mayor Arboretum for the past decade, addressed local officials during a recent government meeting, emphasizing the importance of green spaces in Washoe County. Representing the Mayor Arboretum Society, a nonprofit organization that has supported the arboretum since 1986, Dimmit invited attendees to a tour scheduled for Friday, July 12th, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.
During the tour, participants will learn about the society's ongoing projects and future plans aimed at enhancing the arboretum's appeal. Dimmit highlighted the critical role that green spaces play in attracting tourism, boosting local businesses, and increasing the tax base as the county continues to grow. He noted that the garden, established in the early 1980s, has seen significant support from the society, which has contributed over $1.2 million since 2017, with an anticipated $230,000 investment this year alone.
Dimmit urged local officials to recognize the arboretum's value and to seek support from state legislators to further promote and preserve this community asset. He concluded by stressing the importance of the arboretum for current and future generations, calling on officials to engage actively in its preservation and enhancement.
