In a recent meeting, the Murray City Redevelopment Agency (RDA) approved the transfer of several properties to the city, which are essential for the ongoing construction of the new city hall complex and the extension of Hanauer Street. The properties, currently owned by the RDA, are located at the center of the redesigned street layout and their transfer was unanimously supported by the board.
The meeting also addressed the relocation of the historic Townsend House, a topic that has been under discussion for some time. The agency faced challenges in securing a local company to move the structure, as the only firm with prior experience in such projects expressed concerns about their aging equipment and workforce. They recommended Wolf House and Building Movers, a company with a solid track record in the Salt Lake area, which provided a preliminary estimate of $400,000 for the move. However, additional costs for site preparation and stabilization could push the total to a minimum of $500,000.
Given the high costs associated with relocating the Townsend House, an alternative proposal was discussed. This plan involves creating a small historic square that would preserve the Townsend House in its current location while also restoring the adjacent Margaret Calhoun House. The proposal aims to enhance the historical significance of the area, which includes the nearby Murray Mansion, by transforming a parking lot into a plaza that connects these historic structures.
The board expressed interest in the proposal, which has already received endorsements from the Murray History Committee and the Arts Advisory Committee. The discussion also touched on the future of the property where the Townsend House was to be relocated, with the expectation that it would eventually be sold for development.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on the importance of preserving the city's historical assets while considering future development plans, emphasizing the need for public spaces that enhance community engagement.
