During a recent meeting of the Bibb County Commission, significant discussions centered around the demolition of two key structures at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport: the old FAA facility and the current executive terminal. Interim Airport Manager Heather Lowe confirmed that both buildings will be demolished under a $295,000 contract, which aims to facilitate future development at the airport.

Commissioner Watkins raised concerns about the scope of the project, questioning whether the contract covered both buildings. Lowe clarified that it indeed encompasses both the FAA building and the executive terminal, which consists of two floors of office space. The demolition is part of a broader plan, with Lowe indicating that environmental assessments, such as asbestos testing, have already been conducted.

Following the demolition, the next phase will involve issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for design work, with expectations for this process to begin in early fall. The funding for the demolition will come from the county's airport fund, which currently holds less than $1 million.

In addition to the demolition project, the commission also approved a resolution authorizing a new intergovernmental ground lease with the Macon Bibb County Industrial Authority for the Embraer Hangar at the airport. This lease, which will last for 15 years, significantly increases the monthly rent from $14,000 to $54,000. This agreement is expected to enhance job stability and recruitment efforts at the facility, potentially increasing employment from 100 to 300 positions.

The meeting underscored the commission's commitment to revitalizing the airport and supporting local economic development, with officials emphasizing the importance of preparing the local workforce to fill the upcoming job opportunities.
