During a recent meeting of the Ferguson-Florissant School District (FFSD) Board, administrators presented the findings and recommendations from a year-long pilot program for new English Language Arts (ELA) resources aimed at K-5 students. The resources, UFLY and Wit & Wisdom, were introduced to enhance reading skills and comprehension among elementary students across all 13 district schools.

The pilot program, approved by the board in June 2023, provided both print and digital materials to support teachers and students. Feedback was gathered from educators and students throughout the implementation process, with surveys conducted to assess the effectiveness of the resources. The administration emphasized that the adoption of these materials aligns with the district's strategic academic goals, which aim for all students to meet or exceed state standards and demonstrate measurable growth.

Key components of the program focus on early literacy, with UFLY targeting word recognition and decoding skills, while Wit & Wisdom enhances language comprehension through rich content exposure. The administration highlighted the importance of early intervention, noting that students who miss foundational reading benchmarks often struggle to catch up later.

To measure the success of the program, the district has set a SMART goal of achieving a minimum of 3% annual growth on grade-level assessments, including the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) and other interim assessments. The board was informed that the implementation of these resources is expected to be cost-neutral, allowing for continued investment in student literacy without significant financial burden.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for board members to ask questions, as the district prepares for the long-term adoption of these ELA resources to support student achievement in reading.
