Washington County officials reported significant progress in affordable housing initiatives during a recent government meeting, highlighting twelve projects expected to yield 958 affordable housing units for over 1,900 residents. The county is on track to surpass all targets set under the metro affordable housing bonds, with eight projects already completed and two more anticipated within the next six months.
Among the notable developments is Cedar Rising, a four-story building with 82 units located along TV Highway at 174th Avenue, designed to serve families earning under 60% of the median income. Of these, 33 units are allocated for extremely low-income families earning under 30% of the area median income. The project, developed in partnership with Bridge Housing and Hacienda CDC, was recently celebrated with a grand opening attended by county officials.
Another key project, Flambeck Gardens, is currently under construction and is set to open in January 2025. This development will provide 116 units, also aimed at families. Plaza Los Amigos, another collaborative effort, is in the leasing phase, with a grand opening scheduled for September 26. This project consists of 113 units, including 26 designated for very low-income residents.
Washington County is also advancing the Lower 209 project, which will feature approximately 86 units on a metro-owned site. Community engagement efforts have been completed, and the project is moving forward with the establishment of a limited partnership and plans to apply for additional funding.
Despite these advancements, officials noted ongoing challenges in the affordable housing sector, including tight funding for construction and pre-development projects due to high interest rates and rising costs of materials and labor. The meeting underscored the county's commitment to addressing housing needs while navigating these financial hurdles.
