During a recent meeting of the Durham Public Schools (DPS) Board, Interim Superintendent Caddy Moore provided an extensive update on the district's achievements and upcoming initiatives as the 2023-2024 school year draws to a close.
Moore highlighted the successful commencement ceremonies for the class of 2024, where over 2,000 diplomas were awarded, and students collectively earned an impressive $77.1 million in scholarships—$7.6 million more than the previous year. This achievement underscores the district's commitment to preparing students for their future endeavors.
The meeting also covered professional development efforts, including the SPLASH conference, which focused on enhancing staff skills in alignment with student achievement goals. Additionally, a summer leadership retreat was held for school leaders, featuring a keynote address from Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams.
A significant event noted was the visit from Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff and EPA Administrator Jean Ann Gettle, who participated in a press conference at Lions Farm Elementary School. The event aimed to raise awareness about the Biden administration's lead pipe removal initiative and announced funding for clean water in schools.
Moore congratulated several educators for their accomplishments, including Christian Cultharp Parr, a finalist for the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence, and Tyler DeAngelo, a finalist for the Burroughs Welcome Fund CTE Teacher of the Year. Carmen Ramos was also recognized for her selection in the Latinx ed leadership program, which promotes educational equity.
As the district prepares for the upcoming school year, Moore emphasized ongoing maintenance and beautification projects to ensure schools are ready for students. The 2024-2025 school year will introduce the \"Growing Together\" initiative aimed at enhancing equity and access to academic programs.
The meeting concluded with a reminder of the upcoming return of year-round students on July 22 and traditional students on August 26, marking a busy and transformative period for Durham Public Schools.
