In a recent government meeting, local resident Howie Sanborn was celebrated for his selection to represent the United States at the 2024 Paris Paralympics as a member of the triathlon team. Sanborn, a military veteran from Alton, previously served as an Airborne Ranger and was a demonstrator on the U.S. Army parachute team. His life took a dramatic turn in 2012 when he became paralyzed from the waist down after being struck by a distracted driver while biking.
Despite this life-altering incident, Sanborn demonstrated remarkable resilience, completing his first triathlon as a wheelchair athlete just seven months later. His athletic achievements include medaling in three Warrior Games and participating in the Invictus Games. The upcoming Paralympics in France will mark his debut at this prestigious international event.
The meeting also included a reminder about the public participation policy, which allows community members to provide input on agenda items. However, no public comments were made during this session, and there were no appointments scheduled for the evening.
