New programs aim to empower incarcerated youth

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted several key initiatives aimed at enhancing community support and financial management.

One of the standout programs discussed was the training initiative for incarcerated youth, which focuses on equipping them with essential skills for the construction industry. This program, which incurs no cost to taxpayers, collaborates with local high schools, including Marshall High School in Middletown, and plans to expand to Hamilton. The initiative aims to provide real-world experience and foster workplace stability for participants.

The meeting also addressed the status of the Mama's program, which has been a significant community support initiative for the past five years. Although the last class was discontinued, plans are in place to launch a new class later this month, integrating self-sustaining elements into the program.

On the financial front, Finance Director David McCormack presented several cash transfer requests, including a $110,000 transfer to support the Mama's House program and various budget adjustments across departments. Notably, the 12th District Court requested $11,090 for equipment purchases, while the development, planning, and zoning department sought $91,000 for contractor fees related to building inspections.

The commissioners approved a series of appropriations, including $65,000 for temporary air conditioning repairs at the Juvenile Henshin Center and $250,000 for the Butler County Finance Authority's 2024 payment. Additionally, a requisition for $40,000 was made to cover the expected costs of absentee ballots for the upcoming presidential election.

Overall, the meeting underscored the county's commitment to community development and responsible financial management, with a focus on programs that support vulnerable populations and enhance local infrastructure.
