El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Steve Schleicher provided an upbeat update on the election process during a recent government meeting, emphasizing the importance of voter participation on this significant day. With polls open from 7 AM to 7 PM, the county has expanded its voting resources, operating nine Voter Service and Polling Centers (VSPCs) and managing 39 ballot drop boxes to facilitate voter access.
As of the previous day, voter turnout had reached over 20%, which aligns with historical trends for state primaries. Schleicher expressed hope for a turnout of 40%, which would mark a significant increase compared to past elections. He reported that over 91,000 ballots had been processed, with a notable increase in the number of ballots counted just before the election.
Schleicher also addressed concerns regarding undeliverable ballots, noting a decrease from previous years, with only 9,021 ballots currently classified as undeliverable. He urged voters to ensure their ballots are correctly submitted, highlighting the importance of signing ballot envelopes and using designated envelopes for each voter to avoid invalidating votes.
The clerk encouraged citizens to take advantage of the resources available, including the new website that helps voters locate the nearest ballot drop box or VSPC by entering their address. He concluded by reminding voters of the critical deadlines and the importance of not waiting until the last minute to cast their votes. The atmosphere in the office was described as festive, with staff dressed in patriotic attire, reflecting the community's engagement in the electoral process.
