In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the authorization to expend $1,000,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) multipurpose grant funds, presented by grant writer Lily Reyes. The grant aims to address environmental concerns at three identified Brownfield sites, with the potential to extend to two additional sites if funds allow.
Reyes clarified that this grant is distinct from a previously discussed revolving loan grant, despite both being sourced from the EPA. The multipurpose nature of the grant allows for a variety of activities, including cleanup, assessment, and planning. The city of Lawrence, recognized as an environmental justice neighborhood, has over 40 Brownfield sites, prompting the EPA and regional planning agencies to encourage the submission of this grant.
One of the specific sites targeted for remediation is the Florence Street Garage, which has been identified as a priority due to its long-standing status as a Brownfield. The decision-making process for prioritizing sites involves assessments conducted by qualified environmental professionals (QEPs), who evaluate the conditions and history of each location.
The meeting underscored the city's commitment to addressing environmental issues and leveraging available funding to improve public health and safety in affected neighborhoods.
