In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the potential closure of Fellowsville and Roseburg schools for the 2025-2026 academic year, prompted by significant declines in student enrollment. Superintendent Tatham provided an overview of the situation, noting that current enrollment figures stand at just 34 students in grades K-8 at Roseburg and 74 students in pre-K through grade 4 at Fellowsville, indicating that both schools are operating at less than 20% of their building capacity.
The discussion highlighted that the district's comprehensive educational plan, completed in 2020, had already identified the possibility of closing these schools within the next five years. The board had previously authorized Tatham to explore options regarding the closures and report back with findings.
As part of the closure process, Tatham outlined the requirements set forth by the West Virginia Department of Education's Policy 6204, which mandates the preparation of an impact statement detailing enrollment trends, facilities, finances, personnel, student transportation, and community impact. This statement must be made available for public review at least 30 days before any public hearings are scheduled.
Tatham expressed his intent to complete the necessary impact statement and present a proposal to the board for the potential closure of both schools. The board will continue to evaluate the situation as they consider the implications of these potential closures on the community and the district's educational landscape.
