In a recent government meeting, officials approved a one-year contract worth approximately $156,000 for volunteer services under the Aging and Long-Term Services program in Sandoval County. This contract aims to enhance support for seniors and young individuals with exceptional needs, following a significant restructuring of the program post-COVID.
The meeting highlighted the challenges faced in reviving volunteer participation to pre-pandemic levels. Notably, the foster grandparent program was discontinued due to a lack of engagement and concerns regarding seniors' comfort in school environments. Instead, resources have been redirected towards the Senior Companion Program, which pairs seniors living alone with companions to foster social interaction and support.
New initiatives have been introduced at senior centers, including gardening, painting, and book clubs, aimed at enriching the lives of seniors and reducing isolation. The contract also allows for volunteer services to extend to children under 21, particularly those with special needs.
Commissioner Block inquired about the nature of the contract, confirming that it is an execution of an existing agreement rather than a new one. The meeting concluded with unanimous approval from the commissioners, signaling a commitment to enhancing community support through these volunteer programs.
