Airport Landing Fees Spark Controversy Over Traffic and Safety

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the implementation of landing fees at Deland Municipal Airport, a move aimed at managing increasing traffic and generating revenue for airport maintenance. The proposal comes in response to a surge in flight operations, particularly from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which has seen a significant influx of students and aircraft.

Airport manager Jon Ife highlighted that the airport is nearing capacity, with operations doubling over the past few years. He expressed concerns that without landing fees, Deland could become overwhelmed by traffic from nearby airports that are already imposing such fees. The proposed fees would be $3 per thousand pounds and $6 per landing, with exemptions for local tenants who contribute financially to the airport through hangar leases and other agreements.

Commissioners raised questions about the potential impact on flight training students and general aviation traffic. While local flight schools would not incur fees for their operations, transient aircraft from other areas would be subject to the new charges. Some commissioners expressed concerns that the fees might deter pilots from landing in Deland, especially when neighboring airports do not charge similar fees.
