A government meeting focused on a significant rehabilitation project for Highway 50 was held recently, detailing plans for improvements between the I-580 ramps and Deer Run Road. The project, which is expected to take three hours, will involve repaving the highway, updating signage and striping, and making minor widenings to enhance traffic flow at key intersections.
Key features of the project include the addition of turn lanes, drainage improvements, and upgrades to pedestrian facilities, including ADA-compliant curb cuts. The project will also address gaps identified in a recent corridor study, enhancing path connectivity and adding corridor lighting. However, plans for fiber optic installations have been removed from the scope.
The project manager announced that the design phase is currently at 60% completion, with a deadline for final changes set for November. The timeline indicates that right-of-way acquisitions will occur throughout 2026, with bids expected to be advertised by the end of that year. Construction is projected to commence in the early second quarter of 2027.
While the total estimated cost for all proposed improvements is around $13 million, officials noted that not all enhancements will be included in the final project. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is currently reviewing which improvements will be prioritized, and discussions are ongoing regarding potential funding options, including grants, for additional projects that may be pursued by local entities.
The meeting also addressed concerns from Lyon County officials, with Commissioner Novak highlighting the need for attention to conditions extending to Highland Drive. The study's scope included this area, indicating a broader regional focus on infrastructure improvements.
