In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the results of a community survey regarding outdoor sports participation and preferences for field surfaces at Centennial Park. The survey aimed to gather insights from both users and non-users of the park's facilities, revealing a diverse range of sports interests, with pickleball, tennis, and flag football among the most mentioned.
The survey indicated a preference for natural dirt surfaces over synthetic turf, with 52.7% of respondents favoring natural surfaces compared to 42.56% who preferred synthetic options. However, when asked about converting fields to synthetic turf, nearly 60% of participants expressed support for the change, while 40.43% opposed it.
Concerns regarding synthetic turf were also highlighted, particularly regarding safety and temperature. Respondents noted that while many viewed synthetic surfaces as safer for certain sports, there were significant worries about increased injury risks and the heat generated by synthetic materials. Environmental and health concerns related to chemicals used in synthetic fields were also prevalent among those opposed to the conversion.
The meeting underscored the importance of understanding community preferences and concerns as officials consider potential upgrades to Centennial Park's sports facilities. The survey results will inform future decisions on field surface conversions and the overall development of the park's recreational offerings.
