In a recent government meeting, officials provided updates on various community development initiatives and projects aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and housing.

The meeting began with discussions on the expansion of economic development opportunities, particularly regarding a recent property sale to a local tribe. This move is expected to facilitate further growth in the area.

A detailed overview of the permitting process was presented, revealing that the city receives an average of 11 new permit applications weekly, while approximately 8.5 permits are issued during the same timeframe. Currently, around 40 permits are under review, and 30 have been returned to applicants for revisions. The permitting revenue for the year has reached $575,000, highlighting the active role of the community development department beyond long-range planning.

Sound Transit updates were also a focal point, with officials noting that a draft environmental impact statement is anticipated by the end of the third quarter. A comment period will follow, leading to a decision on the preferred station location in 2025. Additionally, early acquisition of a parcel in Fife has been authorized, marking a significant step in the Tacoma Dome Link extension project.

The Tide Flats project is progressing, with a steering committee expected to make recommendations to the Tacoma Planning Commission in October. Recent meetings have reportedly been productive, indicating a positive trajectory for zoning discussions in the area.

In terms of housing, the South Sound Housing Affordability and Attainability Partnership announced a notice of funding application for a capital fund aimed at affordable housing projects. Fife, along with other jurisdictions, has contributed to this fund, which has approximately $600,000 available for projects. The application period has closed, and three proposals are currently under review.
