The Public Safety Committee convened today, with all members present, to discuss key matters including the approval of previous minutes and a significant ordinance regarding domestic violence support.
The committee unanimously approved the minutes before moving on to an ordinance that authorizes the mayor to accept and expend a grant from the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This grant, administered by the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, will continue funding for two investigators within the city’s domestic violence unit, which has been operational for nearly 30 years.
Chief Prosecutor Mister Morgan highlighted the importance of the domestic violence unit, which includes a dedicated prosecutor and investigators who assist in building cases and supporting survivors through the criminal justice process. The grant, valued at approximately $45,000, requires a 25% match from the city, ensuring continued support for this critical service.
Committee members expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing its vital role in aiding victims of domestic violence. The ordinance will be placed on the consent agenda for further consideration by the council.
The meeting concluded with the announcement of the next committee session, the Budget and Finance Committee, scheduled to begin at 3 PM.
