In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the advancement of the Mitchell Hollow Trail project, which aims to enhance connectivity between Highland and Lehi. The trail will extend from the Hidden Pond area, traversing through various properties, including a significant parcel owned by the Peck family, located on the south side of 96100 North.
The council emphasized the importance of obtaining the necessary right-of-way from the Peck family to proceed with the design phase. Previous discussions with Ron Peck indicated a willingness to collaborate, but formal negotiations will commence now that funding is available. The design contract is recommended to be awarded to Consort, a firm that has already conducted preliminary work on the project.
The trail's design is strategically planned to connect with existing corridors and ultimately link to the American Fork Trail, enhancing recreational opportunities and active transportation routes. The project is part of a broader initiative to create a major transportation corridor, known as the Southern Rail Trail, which will follow the rail lines near local shopping centers.
Funding for the project is primarily sourced from the Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG), which will contribute approximately $2.32 million towards the total estimated cost of $5.2 million. The council members expressed support for the project, recognizing its long-term benefits despite the significant financial commitment involved.
A motion to approve the contract with Consort was passed unanimously, marking a significant step forward in the development of the Mitchell Hollow Trail. Council members acknowledged the project's importance in enhancing community infrastructure and promoting outdoor activities, while also noting the ongoing need for budget management as multiple projects are underway.
