In a recent city council meeting, significant discussions centered around updates to firework restrictions and the city’s fraud risk assessment.
Council members expressed enthusiasm over long-awaited infrastructure developments, particularly the Millhaven Trail connection, which aims to enhance accessibility between the city center and Murdoch. This connection has been a topic of discussion for over three decades, and its realization marks a notable achievement for local residents.
The council then turned its attention to a resolution proposing updates to firework restrictions, which had not been revised since 2020. The proposed changes include the removal of certain areas from the firework restriction map, specifically neighborhoods that have developed since the last update. However, concerns were raised regarding the consistency of restrictions, particularly in relation to the proximity of residential areas to parks. Some council members argued for a more uniform application of firework bans, especially near Highland Glen Park, to mitigate fire risks.

In addition to firework regulations, the council reviewed the city’s fraud risk assessment, noting an improvement in their score from 305 to 350 points, placing them at the high end of the moderate risk category. This increase is attributed to enhanced staff training and the implementation of a whistleblower policy. The council discussed the potential benefits of establishing an internal audit function and an audit committee to further reduce fraud risk and improve oversight.
