In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a new memorandum of agreement aimed at addressing the opioid crisis through a collaborative initiative known as the Post Overdose Support Team (POST). The program, which involves the City of Crestview, the Department of Health (DOH), Bridgeway Center, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), is designed to provide immediate support to individuals who have experienced an overdose.
Chief of Police from Fort Walton Beach, Robert Bage, highlighted the importance of the POST program, which will deploy trained officers to engage with overdose survivors within 24 to 72 hours after an incident. The goal is to connect these individuals with available services and resources to help prevent future overdoses. Chief Bage emphasized that the initiative not only aims to save lives but also to humanize law enforcement and demonstrate community care.
During the meeting, Chief Bage also took the opportunity to commend Crestview Mayor J.B. Witten for his leadership in combating the opioid epidemic. He praised the mayor's proactive approach, which includes Narcan distribution, education, and outreach efforts that have significantly impacted the community's response to drug addiction and overdose prevention. Bage noted that Witten's mentorship has inspired many local leaders to adopt compassionate and evidence-based strategies in their fight against the crisis.
The POST initiative represents a significant step forward in the collaborative efforts to address the opioid epidemic, showcasing a commitment to not only saving lives but also fostering a supportive community environment for those affected by addiction.
