Middletown plans ambitious renovation for historic McDonough school

During a recent Middletown Common Council meeting, Superintendent Dr. Vasquez Matos presented a compelling case for the renovation of McDonough School, emphasizing its historical significance and urgent need for modernization. Established a century ago, McDonough has been a cornerstone of the community, but its aging infrastructure now poses challenges for both students and educators.

Dr. Matos highlighted critical issues such as outdated plumbing and electrical systems, inadequate heating, and the absence of air conditioning, which severely impact the learning environment, particularly during hot weather. He pointed out safety concerns regarding the school's layout, specifically the main office's location, which is not optimally positioned to protect students.

The superintendent proposed a vision for McDonough that retains its historical character while modernizing its facilities. He noted that Connecticut currently offers a 66% reimbursement rate for general construction, making this an opportune moment for the community to invest in its children's education. \"Our children deserve better,\" he stated, advocating for a school that inspires and prepares them for the future.

Following Dr. Matos, representatives from TSKP Studios presented a feasibility study outlining potential renovations. They proposed increasing student enrollment capacity from 230 to nearly 350 by reconfiguring the existing space and adding new facilities. The plan includes a new entrance, improved traffic flow for drop-offs, and enhanced outdoor play areas, all while preserving the original 1924 building's facade.

The TSKP team acknowledged the existing building's structural integrity but noted that many of the later additions have not aged well. They emphasized the need for immediate repairs, particularly concerning persistent roof leaks and outdated mechanical systems. The proposed renovations aim to create a modern educational environment that aligns with the school's STEM focus, ensuring that McDonough remains a vital educational resource for the community.
