Public Safety Building Flooded After Severe Storm Hits Canton

The Canton City Council meeting highlighted two significant topics: an upcoming community event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and updates on storm damage to the Public Safety Municipal Court Complex.

City officials announced a vibrant community event set to kick off at 11 a.m., which will feature food from various countries, entertainment, and resources for residents. This event marks the unofficial start of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15. City representatives encouraged citizens to attend, emphasizing that most activities will be free.

In a separate discussion, Mr. Ingram provided an update on storm damage sustained by the Public Safety Municipal Court Complex during severe thunderstorms on August 30. The storm caused significant leaks in the building, which was already undergoing a roofing project. Emergency response teams, including public safety personnel, worked diligently to mitigate the damage, with Southeast Restoration arriving on-site to address water remediation efforts.

The council noted that operations within the building would be temporarily disrupted as staff relocated to accommodate repairs. The restoration process is expected to take approximately ten days, during which air quality and moisture levels will be monitored to prevent mold growth. Further renovations, including replacing damaged materials, will follow the initial remediation.

City officials expressed gratitude for the teamwork displayed during the emergency response and reiterated their commitment to improving facilities for the community. Additionally, they announced plans to increase treatment capacity at the local sewer plant, signaling ongoing infrastructure improvements.
