Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Virgin Valley Chapter gathered at a recent city council meeting to announce two upcoming events aimed at promoting patriotism and community engagement. Ruth Dickey, a member of the DAR, detailed the first event, \"Bells Across America,\" scheduled for September 17th at Veterans Memorial Park. The event will commemorate the signing and reading of the U.S. Constitution, featuring a program that includes the Mesquite Bell Choir, speeches from Mayor Al Littman and council member Bridal Wurster, and a presentation by historian Geoffrey McKenna, who will discuss his book on the American Revolution.
The following day, McKenna will speak to local fifth-grade students about U.S. history and patriotism, emphasizing the contributions of lesser-known figures from the American Revolution. His book, \"Saving Doctor Warren,\" will be available for purchase at both events.
In addition, Amy Bradshaw announced the 5th Annual Veterans Center Fundraiser, set for November 9th at the Virgin River event tent. This year's theme is a country western jamboree, featuring a buffet, live music, and various activities. Proceeds from the event will support the local Veterans Center, with tickets already selling quickly.
The meeting also included public comments regarding councilman Brian Wursten's residency. Resident Steve Clutteram raised concerns about Wursten's living situation, alleging that he has been residing in Saint George, Utah, while claiming to be a Mesquite resident. Clutteram called for an investigation into Wursten's residency status, suggesting that if the allegations are true, it could have significant implications for his position on the council.
In response, Wursten addressed the allegations, confirming that he purchased a home in Saint George to support his daughter but maintains that he resides in Mesquite. He expressed frustration over the accusations and emphasized his commitment to the community, highlighting his charitable contributions and ongoing involvement in local affairs.
The meeting concluded with a reminder of the upcoming 9/11 memorial service, underscoring the community's commitment to honoring those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
