The recent government meeting highlighted the success of the annual Independence Fest, which drew an estimated 22,000 attendees this year. The event kicked off with a children's parade featuring creatively decorated floats and culminated in an evening celebration at Bakersfield Park, headlined by country artist Pat Green. This year marked a record attendance with over 53 vendors participating, showcasing a variety of food and local businesses.
The festivities included a free kids' zone, a car show with 71 entries, and a bubble performer who entertained children throughout the day. Despite high temperatures reaching a heat index of 108 degrees, community members turned out in large numbers, demonstrating strong support for the event.
City officials expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various departments, including public safety and public works, which contributed to the smooth execution of the day’s activities. Plans for next year’s event are already underway, with discussions about incorporating a flyover featuring fighter jets.
In addition to celebrating the festival's success, council members proposed future agenda items, including the creation of a memorial trophy in honor of a local car show enthusiast and considerations for road expansion in a newly developed area to alleviate traffic congestion.
The meeting concluded with unanimous approval of consent items and a presentation regarding the Denton Creek Boulevard Bridge construction project, emphasizing the city’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development.
