During a recent Chandler city council meeting, two remarkable individuals were honored for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the community.
The first recognition was awarded to Olivia Liu, a junior at Hamilton High School and a member of the mayor's youth commission. Liu recently excelled at the 2024 American Artistic Roller Skating National Championships held in Union, Missouri, where she won two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, competing against 300 skaters from 36 clubs nationwide. In her acceptance speech, Liu expressed gratitude for the support from her family and coaches, emphasizing that her success is a collective achievement. She also thanked Mayor Alexis and the council for their commitment to promoting sports and young athletes in Chandler.
The meeting also highlighted the bravery of Maria Andrade, who received the Meritorious Conduct Award for her quick thinking during an attempted bank robbery on June 3. While working at the bank, Andrade noticed a suspicious individual approaching the building and took immediate action by locking the doors, thereby preventing the suspect from entering and ensuring the safety of herself and her colleagues. Officer Stover, who presented the award, commended Andrade's alertness and attentiveness, noting that her actions exemplified the mission of the Chandler Police Department.
Both recognitions underscored the importance of community support and individual courage, showcasing the talent and dedication present in Chandler.
