The council unanimously approved a special event liquor license for Mister Herman A. Celaya, facilitating a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz County, scheduled for October 2nd and 3rd, 2024.
Additionally, the council authorized an intergovernmental agreement with Nogales School District No. 1 to reimburse salaries and related expenses for two police school resource officers at Nogales High School and Wade Carpenter Middle School for the 2024-2025 school year. This initiative aims to enhance safety and support within local schools.
The council also approved the purchase of pepper ball launchers and equipment, funded through Arizona House Bill 2897, totaling $112,800. This purchase is part of the Nogales Police Department's efforts to bolster community safety.
In a significant move, the council accepted a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, amounting to $1,418,676 over four years, aimed at mitigating overdose issues within the community. Furthermore, a grant agreement with the Tohono O'odham Nation was authorized, providing an additional $100,000 for police department funding.
The council appointed Gracie Mariscal to the appeals commission and authorized the city manager to sign a petition for annexation requested by the Rio Rico Fire District for five land parcels in the Wababy Ranch area.
Lastly, the council considered an ordinance to prohibit compression release engine braking within city limits, a measure aimed at protecting public health and safety. All discussed motions passed with unanimous support from council members.
