In a recent government meeting, officials declared September as Substance Recovery Month, emphasizing the importance of community support for individuals battling substance use disorders. Jeff, a representative from Community and Family Resources (CFR), highlighted that addiction affects approximately one million people, underscoring the need for collective efforts to foster an environment of healing and reduce stigma surrounding recovery.
The meeting also provided updates on CFR's initiatives, including the establishment of a new 14-bed recovery and residential facility for men at 500 Fair Meadow Avenue, previously the site of Veterans Affairs. This facility is set to open by the end of the month, with an open house scheduled for September 25 from 4 to 6 PM.
CFR is actively engaging with local schools, including Clarion Community Middle School, to deliver a week-long program on vaping, smoking, and tobacco awareness. Additionally, they plan to implement life skills programming in Eagle Grove and Belmont, with no significant resistance reported from school officials, despite some communication challenges due to staff turnover.
Mental health services are also being expanded, with a counselor available every Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM, accommodating both appointments and walk-ins. The new recovery facility will include a full-time substance use disorder counselor, a case manager, and two peer recovery coaches.
The board unanimously approved a proclamation to officially recognize September as Recovery Month, reinforcing the community's commitment to supporting those in recovery and promoting awareness of available resources.
