In a recent government meeting, the council approved a cooperative use contract with Arizona Recreation Design Incorporated to install two new playground systems at Heritage Park, aimed at children aged 2 to 12. The project, which totals $299,996.86, will utilize $250,000 from the current year's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and a $50,000 grant from Florence Copper.
Paul King, a representative involved in the project, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the playground design, stating that the goal is to create engaging and safe play areas for all children, including those with special needs. The design phase will involve collaboration with Florence Copper and a consultant specializing in adaptive recreation programming to ensure the playground meets diverse needs.
Vice Mayor raised concerns regarding the inclusion of ADA-compliant features and the necessity of fencing to ensure the safety of children, particularly those with autism. The council acknowledged these considerations as vital for the project's success.
Following the playground discussion, the council moved to appoint new members to the Community Services Advisory Board. Rebecca Smith, Bridal Lapos Babson, and Julie Merriman were approved for terms expiring in 2026, 2024, and 2025, respectively. Council members expressed gratitude to all applicants for their willingness to serve the community, with special recognition given to Merriman for her commitment.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote in favor of both the playground project and the board appointments, reflecting the council's dedication to enhancing community resources and services.
