During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the implementation of solar-operated speed display signs in response to growing citizen concerns about traffic speeds in Carefree. The initiative aims to enhance road safety along major streets frequented by both residents and visitors, particularly those heading to nearby lakes and neighboring towns.

The proposed plan includes the installation of two signs at five strategic locations throughout the town, including Cave Creek Road and Tom Darlington Drive. These signs are designed to educate drivers about their speed, providing a gentler alternative to traditional enforcement methods like photo radar. The data collected from these signs will be shared with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), allowing for targeted enforcement in areas identified as problematic.

Officials noted that the current speed signs are outdated and less effective than newer models, which feature larger displays and advanced data collection capabilities. The installation of these new signs is expected to take place in late winter to early spring, coinciding with the peak travel season when many seasonal visitors arrive.

The estimated cost for each sign is approximately $48,100, with an additional $750 for supporting assembly. A seven-year contract for data sharing with law enforcement will incur an annual fee of $310 per sign. Despite the financial commitment, officials emphasized the importance of using this data to improve traffic safety and better allocate law enforcement resources.

Additionally, concerns were raised about speeding on Carefree Highway, which is under the jurisdiction of Scottsdale. Officials indicated that they would collaborate with Scottsdale to address these issues, particularly as Scottsdale is currently developing improvement plans for the highway.
