During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the 2025 health insurance renewal package from the Better Health Collective, which revealed an average increase of 8% across four health plans. This renewal comes with a 15% rate cap for the following year, 2026.
Chris, a representative from the health insurance broker, highlighted that Brainerd's claims have exceeded premiums paid for the second consecutive year, averaging $866 in claims per member per month against $691 in premiums. Without the collective's support, the increase could have approached 20%, given the current medical trend of 8 to 10%.
The Better Health Collective will transition from Health Partners to Blue Cross Blue Shield in 2025, necessitating adjustments to the open enrollment timeline. The wellness committee, which met earlier this month, recommended the council accept the renewal as presented.
Concerns were raised regarding the high costs of specialty drugs and delayed medical procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic, which have contributed to the claims increase. However, it was noted that claims have decreased compared to the previous year, and generic drug utilization remains high.
The wellness committee plans to focus on education regarding musculoskeletal issues, which are among the highest claims, and will introduce a new program in 2025 aimed at providing physical therapy to potentially reduce the need for surgeries.
The council unanimously approved the motion to accept the renewal package, signaling a commitment to managing health care costs while addressing the needs of its members.
