Residents demand accountability from Marietta Board of Lights

During a recent Marietta City Council meeting, community concerns regarding the Marietta Board of Lights and Water were raised by a long-time resident. The speaker, a homeowner for 21 years, expressed gratitude for first responders while highlighting issues related to the governance of the Board, which is composed of appointed members rather than elected officials. She questioned the lack of term limits for board members, noting that some have served for over two decades, and emphasized the importance of accountability through elections.

The resident pointed out that while city council members are elected and subject to term limits, the Board operates without similar oversight, raising concerns about transparency and representation. She also questioned the higher utility rates paid by Marietta residents compared to neighboring Cobb EMC, suggesting that local wealth could be better utilized to enhance community services.

Following this public comment, the council moved on to a consent agenda, which included various items that had been reviewed in previous meetings. The agenda was approved unanimously, allowing the council to streamline its proceedings.

Additionally, a public hearing was conducted regarding a rezoning request by SWI Investments, LLC, for properties on Bells Ferry Road. The request included several variances, such as reducing the minimum tract size and waiving requirements for parking and recreational areas. The council heard from representatives of the investment group, who presented their plans for the mixed-use development.
