In a recent government meeting, the Shawnee City Commission approved a significant transfer of federal home matching funds from the city to South Central Industries, Inc., aimed at enhancing affordable housing initiatives. The transfer involves approximately $483,000 in banked matching funds that the city had not previously utilized. This decision aligns with the city’s strategic goal of increasing affordable housing availability for residents.
Brian Harkins, a city representative, explained that the Home fund is a federal grant program designed to support affordable housing through various means, including new construction and rental assistance. The funds will be used by South Central Industries for upcoming housing projects, specifically the construction of two new rental homes on city-donated lots. These homes will cater to low- to moderate-income individuals, furthering the city’s commitment to affordable housing.
The meeting also addressed the adoption of a new unified development code, a project that has been in the works for nearly three years. This code aims to simplify zoning regulations, promote economic vitality, and enhance housing opportunities. Key changes include reducing minimum lot sizes and consolidating commercial and industrial districts, making it easier for property owners and developers to navigate the regulations. The planning commission had previously reviewed and recommended the code, which is expected to position Shawnee favorably compared to other communities in terms of development attractiveness.
The commission's discussions highlighted the importance of community input throughout the development code's revision process, with many local stakeholders expressing support for the changes. The approval of both the fund transfer and the new development code marks a significant step forward in Shawnee's efforts to address housing needs and streamline development processes.
