In a recent government meeting, the approval of the Northwest Library project plan was a key focus, with the resolution passed to proceed with construction and authorize a guaranteed maximum price amendment. The meeting featured presentations from Mike Day, the bond PMO program director, and project manager Erica Bagan, who outlined the project’s goals, design updates, and community engagement efforts.
The new Northwest Library will be built on a newly acquired site, transitioning from a leased space to an owned facility, significantly expanding its size to approximately 11,000 square feet. The design incorporates community feedback, featuring dedicated spaces for children, teens, and flexible meeting areas, as well as upgraded technology and art that reflects local culture. The selected color scheme, inspired by the migration of swifts, received nearly 1,200 votes from the public.
Construction mobilization began on August 5, with substantial completion expected by summer 2025. The project is tracking well on sustainability goals, aiming for LEED Silver certification and demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with over 27% participation from COVID-impacted businesses, including a significant representation from women-owned enterprises.
Commissioners expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential economic benefits and the importance of maintaining strong communication with labor groups to address any concerns. The resolution was unanimously adopted, marking a significant milestone in the library's expansion efforts.
