During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on the upcoming 2nd Annual Carson City Murals and Music Festival, scheduled for September 26-28. The festival aims to enhance community engagement through art, with a focus on inclusivity, particularly for the senior demographic.
Eric Brooks, the festival organizer, presented proposals for two significant mural projects. The first is a mural at the Carson City Senior Center, designed by Reno artist Haley Meadows. This mural will complement a courtyard renovation funded by a private donor in memory of a regular attendee who cherished the outdoors. The donor has allocated part of their contribution to support the mural, which has received unanimous approval from the Senior Center's Nonprofit Governing Board.
The second mural, proposed for the south-facing wall of the Carson City Community Center, will be created by artist Eric Burke. His design aims to reflect the diverse community and will incorporate elements inspired by local wildlife and legends. This project is funded through the Arts and Culture budget and a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, ensuring no additional financial burden on the city.
The festival has expanded from an initial goal of 12 murals to 21, featuring both local and international artists, including Javier Corte from Spain and Leila Erbilts, who will explore themes related to Basque heritage. The event will also include live music performances, hands-on activities, and a focus on community involvement.
Publicity efforts for the festival are robust, with plans for press releases, radio interviews, and social media campaigns to ensure widespread awareness. The event aims to not only beautify the city but also to foster a sense of community and celebrate artistic expression in Carson City.
