Massive renovation plan unveiled for Mount Pleasant schools

In a recent government meeting, officials outlined an ambitious plan for the renovation and expansion of educational facilities in the Mount Pleasant School District, marking the fifth phase of a long-term development initiative that began in the early 1990s. The proposed projects include significant upgrades to Mount Pleasant Elementary and Mount Pleasant High School, both of which are in dire need of modernization.

Mount Pleasant Elementary, built in 1932, is set for a comprehensive renovation that will address safety concerns and improve accessibility. Plans include relocating the main office for better security, enlarging kindergarten classrooms to meet state recommendations, and enhancing cafeteria facilities. The renovations will also incorporate additions to the building, ensuring that the upgrades do not disrupt the adjacent community center.

Mount Pleasant High School, the third largest in Delaware, will undergo extensive renovations to address outdated infrastructure and accessibility issues. Key improvements will include relocating high-voltage lines currently running through athletic fields, simplifying the school's confusing layout, and upgrading facilities for the music department and athletics. The school’s existing utilities, including problematic sewer systems, will also be addressed to ensure compliance with modern standards.

Additionally, the district is prioritizing the development of inclusive playgrounds across eight elementary schools, with a focus on creating accessible play surfaces that cater to children with disabilities. The estimated cost for these playgrounds is around $600,000 each, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity in school environments.

The meeting also highlighted the need for new athletic facilities, including proper field houses and synthetic turf fields, to replace outdated infrastructure that currently relies on temporary solutions like porta-potties. The proposed upgrades aim to enhance the overall athletic experience for students and the community, ensuring compliance with ADA standards.

The total estimated cost for these extensive renovations and new constructions is approximately $217 million, with a local share of $86 million. This investment reflects the district's commitment to providing safe, modern, and inclusive educational environments for all students.
