The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners celebrated the University of Tampa Spartans' remarkable achievement in collegiate baseball during a recent meeting. The Spartans captured their ninth national championship at the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championship, defeating Angelo State University 8-3 in June. This victory ties the Spartans with Florida Southern for the most national titles in Division II history.
Commissioners recognized the team's outstanding performance, highlighting their impressive season record of 52 wins against only eight losses. The championship win not only marks a significant milestone for the program but also prevents Angelo State from securing back-to-back titles, a feat accomplished only six times in the championship's 51-year history.
Coach Joe Erso, who has been instrumental in the team's success, was commended for his leadership and dedication to the sport. With over 1,000 career wins, Erso is celebrated as one of the most accomplished active coaches in college baseball. The board presented formal commendations to the team and coaches, acknowledging their contributions to the university and the local community.
The meeting concluded with an invitation for the team members to speak and take photos, further celebrating their historic achievement and reinforcing the University of Tampa's status as a powerhouse in collegiate baseball.
