In a recent government meeting, the Planning Commission reviewed a proposal for a new medical waste treatment and transfer facility at 1850 Gillespie Way, submitted by Medical Environmental Technologies LLC. The facility, which is CEQA exempt, aims to relocate from its current site on Fayette Street, approximately half a mile away.
The proposed site spans 2.8 acres and includes a 20,800 square foot industrial warehouse, with 54 parking spaces available. The area is surrounded by industrial and food processing facilities, and is designated as an Industrial Park under the general plan. A conditional use permit is required for hazardous waste treatment facilities in this manufacturing zone.
The facility will collect medical waste from local healthcare providers, including hospitals and veterinary offices, and will utilize an autoclave for sterilization. The operation will comply with the Medical Waste Management Act, ensuring proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials. The facility is designed to operate with minimal public interaction, resembling a warehouse more than a public-facing business.
Staff recommendations included the installation of a bike rack and modifications to the trash enclosure to meet current zoning regulations. The Planning Commission is expected to approve the conditional use permit, citing the facility's alignment with local land use plans and its potential to provide essential services for medical waste management in the region.
