During a recent government meeting in Portage, Mayor Patricia M. Randall proclaimed September 2024 as National Suicide Prevention Month, emphasizing the importance of awareness and support for those affected by suicide. The proclamation was presented by Ashley Kipp, Vice President of Community and Staff Wellness at Griffin Place, a nonprofit organization dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
Kipp highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding suicide, noting it as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the second leading cause among individuals aged 10 to 34. Griffin Place plays a crucial role in the Kalamazoo community, offering various programs such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, suicide prevention training, and support groups for survivors of suicide loss. The organization is recognized for its expertise, with staff certified by the American Association of Suicidology.
In her remarks, Kipp shared that Griffin Place handles over 60,000 calls annually through the 988 hotline and trains more than 3,000 students and adults in suicide prevention techniques. She also announced that the organization would host a series of community training sessions throughout September, coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day, and an annual fundraising walk on September 21 in Bronson Park, Kalamazoo. All proceeds from the walk will remain local to support suicide prevention efforts in the area.
The mayor encouraged citizens to educate themselves on the signs of suicide and to reach out to those in need, reinforcing the message that individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts are not alone and can seek help. The meeting concluded with a reminder for community members to review the consent agenda available on the City of Portage website.
