In a recent Portage City Council meeting, discussions highlighted community safety concerns and innovative proposals aimed at reducing traffic-related incidents. Jessica Swigert, president of the Pen Ridge Trail Homeowners Association, addressed the council regarding alarming speed control issues within her community. She emphasized the dangers posed by speeding vehicles at a critical intersection shared with a neighboring condominium development, where multiple close calls between vehicles and pedestrians have been reported. Swigert urged the council to evaluate the area for potential speed-reducing measures, such as speed humps, to enhance safety for residents.
Additionally, an inventor presented a new safety system designed to prevent accidents, claiming it could save up to 1,000 lives. The inventor encouraged the council to reach out to major corporations like GM and Apple for support in developing this initiative. He also mentioned a separate invention that would automatically shut off vehicles when refueling, preventing them from starting until the fuel cap is secured.
The meeting also included a consent agenda, which was approved unanimously by the council members without any items being removed for individual consideration. The council continues to prioritize community safety and innovative solutions as they move forward with their agenda.
