In a recent council meeting, city transportation planner David Payne presented updates on the Benson Corridor project, which has received funding through the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) Equity pilot grant. The PSRC's Equity Advisory Committee has revised its scoring criteria to better incorporate equity considerations into grant evaluations. As a result, all applicants, including the city, were awarded funding.
The Benson Corridor plan aims to enhance community engagement and revise the transportation master plan, leveraging existing infrastructure and community amenities. The project will involve environmental analysis, zoning recommendations, and community-driven design processes. The council unanimously approved the acceptance of $709,364 in grant funds to support the completion of the plan.
Additionally, Payne introduced upcoming grant applications, including a focus on railroad crossing safety through the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The council is set to explore these opportunities in the coming month, signaling a proactive approach to improving transportation safety and equity in the region.
