During a recent government meeting, representatives from the Alhambra Garden Club voiced concerns regarding the ownership and future of the historic Patchen's Post Office in Mount Pleasant. Built in 1899, this structure is recognized as the first freestanding post office in the area and holds significant historical value.
In September 2023, the Alhambra Garden Club reached out to the town to discuss ways to promote the post office's historic significance. Following a meeting with town staff in October, club representatives were informed by James Ward that the town believed it owned the building. In response, the club compiled historical evidence, including town council minutes from June 7, 1971, which indicated that the town had granted permission for the Alhambra Garden Club to place the post office at its current location on the corner of Pitt and Bank Streets.
Despite providing this documentation to town attorney Louis Horton over five months ago, the club has yet to receive a response. The club's representative emphasized their desire to collaborate with the town for the post office's benefit, referencing past support from town council member Harry Hetopoulos, who played a key role in restoring the building.
The Alhambra Garden Club expressed hope that their contributions to the community would not be overlooked and sought clarity on the town's stance regarding the post office's ownership and future. The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining historical relationships and the club's commitment to preserving local heritage.
