In a recent council meeting, officials discussed the urgent need to extend floodplain interim regulations, as Council Bill 120,808 marks the seventh extension since the original ordinance was passed in July 2020. The current regulations, which are set to expire on August 13, are crucial for property owners in flood-prone areas, including those along Puget Sound and the Duwamish River. Without the extension, residents would be unable to secure flood insurance, leaving them vulnerable to potential disasters.
The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) has proposed permanent regulations based on feedback from stakeholders, including the port. These new regulations are expected to be presented to the land use committee before February 2025, aiming to eliminate the need for further extensions.
Additionally, the council is set to review Council Bill 120-832, which updates the building and energy codes to align with the 2021 Seattle construction codes. This legislation incorporates standards from various national organizations and is part of a regular three-year update cycle to ensure safety in construction practices.
The upcoming land use committee meeting on August 7 will also feature a roundtable discussion focused on climate issues, where community stakeholders will explore strategies to achieve antidisplacement and density goals while addressing climate challenges. This meeting will include contributions from representatives of FutureWise, The Nature Conservancy, and Seattle 350, highlighting the city's commitment to integrating climate considerations into urban planning.
