During a recent government meeting, Milwaukee's Parks Development Coordinator Adam Warren provided an update on the city's ongoing park projects, highlighting progress and community engagement efforts. The meeting focused on the development of three parks: Scott Park, Bowman Bray Park, and Belfort Park, with an emphasis on equity-based engagement and funding sources.
Warren reported that the projects are largely on schedule and within budget, thanks to consistent community involvement and strategic decision-making. Notably, 97% of the funding for these parks comes from grants, including $2.25 million from the American Recovery Plan Act (ARPA). Warren expressed gratitude to local legislators for their support in securing these funds.
The parks have undergone significant enhancements, including the addition of paved paths, accessible seating, and increased plantings. Community engagement efforts included surveys and focus groups, which yielded over 1,000 responses, with a notable representation from diverse populations.
Warren addressed challenges faced during construction, such as unforeseen underground obstacles, but reassured attendees that these issues have been managed effectively. He also announced that the parks will have soft openings in October, with a larger celebration planned for March 8, 2024, to coincide with the completion of all three parks.
The meeting underscored the city's commitment to creating inclusive and accessible recreational spaces, with ongoing updates to keep the community informed and engaged in the development process.
