During a recent Milwaukee city council meeting, several community initiatives and updates were discussed, highlighting the city's commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
Councillor Stavanger announced an upcoming interactive event aimed at repurposing broken crayons into new coloring blocks. This initiative, which encourages creativity among youth and adults alike, will take place on Thursday, September 12, at Wichita Park from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Residents are invited to participate in the melting process, which not only promotes art but also supports the development of fine motor skills in children.
In addition to the crayon project, the council provided an update on the Monroe Street Greenway project, a significant east-west route that has been in planning for over 15 years. This greenway aims to create safe, low-speed roads for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, enhancing connectivity across neighborhoods and downtown Milwaukee.
The meeting also featured a creative twist, with a call for public haiku submissions to be read at future sessions. Councillor Stavanger shared a haiku celebrating Milwaukee's vibrancy, which served as a segue into discussions about the city's environmental initiatives.
Public Works Director Peter Pasiroli introduced Katie Guevaras, the new climate and natural resources manager, who brings valuable experience from her previous role in Portland. Pasiroli emphasized the importance of the B City USA initiative, which aligns with the city’s ongoing efforts in climate action and community involvement. This initiative, driven by community interest, aims to enhance Milwaukee's environmental stewardship and will be further discussed in upcoming meetings.
