Commissioner Saunders initiated the discussion, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future incidents.

The meeting featured presentations from transportation officials, including Trinity Scott, head of the Transportation Management Services department, and Anthony Khawaja, chief traffic operation engineer. They outlined current traffic signal management practices, including the timing of yellow and all-red clearance intervals designed to give drivers adequate time to react and stop safely. For instance, at the intersection of Livingston and Golden Gate Parkway, the yellow light lasts 4.8 seconds, while the all-red phase is 2.6 seconds, allowing vehicles that may have entered after the yellow light to clear the intersection safely.

However, concerns were raised about the effectiveness of these measures in light of the recent accident, which highlighted the prevalence of red light running in the area. Community members expressed frustration over reckless driving behaviors, citing a lack of police presence and the absence of red light cameras as contributing factors to the problem. One resident, Natalie Ryzak, noted that there have been at least 11 accidents at the Logan and Immokalee intersection since June, calling for immediate action to improve safety.

Suggestions from the public included increasing the delay between red and green lights to allow more time for vehicles to clear intersections and implementing red light cameras to deter violations. The Collier Metropolitan Planning Organization is also working on a comprehensive safety action plan, funded by a federal grant, aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries across Collier County.

As the meeting concluded, officials committed to further analysis of the specific intersection where the accident occurred and to explore additional enforcement strategies in collaboration with the sheriff's department.
