During a recent government meeting, community leaders celebrated the success of the National Night Out event, which fostered fun and togetherness among residents. Trustee Hebel, Commissioner Britton, and Congressman Brad Schneider were in attendance, with commendations directed towards the police department for their role in hosting the event.
The meeting also featured a presentation by Sustainability Commissioner Ying Wang, who addressed the pressing issue of food waste. Wang highlighted that approximately 43% of food waste occurs at home or in restaurants, contributing to a staggering $27 million wasted annually at the national level. In Northbrook, with a population of around 33,170, this translates to an estimated 12,000 households wasting about 1,200 pounds of food each year, equating to nearly $1,886 per household.
Wang emphasized the environmental impact of food waste, noting its significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. She urged the community to take action, particularly as Northbrook prepares to implement a new composting service. Resources and tips for reducing food waste were shared, including meal planning and proper food storage techniques.
The meeting underscored the importance of community engagement in sustainability efforts, with Wang encouraging residents to utilize local resources, such as the Northbrook Go Green initiative, to learn more about reducing food waste and its environmental implications.
